The following letter has been sent by Cosatu General Secretary,
Zwelinzima Vavi, to John Sweeney, the President of the
AFL/CIO, America's trade union federation.
11 September 2001
Dear President John Sweeney
I do not know how to express my shock and disgust at what
happened today in New York and Washington.
You must however know, that COSATU and its 2 million
members and indeed all South African workers and people are
with you and the entire over 13 million members of the AFL-CIO
at this difficult moment. No course cant be served through
indiscriminate attacks on unarmed ordinary citizens. We have
not heard of such absolute madness happening at this scale
before and we are simply shocked.
Send our solidaraity message to AFL-CIO leadership and
membership. We wish this could have not happened. Send our
deep condolences to families of the victims of this senseless act
of extreme torrorism.
Yours comradely
Zwelinzima Vavi
