PRESS RELEASE: The Party of the European Left supports the 48-hour general strike in Greece!

Greece is paralyzed by a 48 hours general strike, the 17th since the adoption, one year ago, of the first measures to try to come out of the massive debt of 350 billion Euros accumulated by the Greek State and that is in danger of bankruptcy.

Coinciding with the vote in the Parliament of the new package of measures demanded by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund so that Greece obtain a new loan, the unions, progressive associations, students, the “indignants” and the political Left have decided to carry on with their protests and convene a 48-hour strike, to show its total rejection of the measures which the Government intends to adopt following the EU advice’s and threats.

The further cuts in public spending, the increase of taxes for workers and the privatizations’ plan that, according to the Papandreou Government calculations, would bring 50 billion Euros for the state, are measures that have led to a very strong popular opposition, tired of paying a crisis that they didn’t provoke.

Concrete measures:

• Wage cuts: € 2,2 billion.
• Cuts in pensions and other costs of the social security: € 5 billion.
• The increase in the contributions of workers and pensioners to Social security: € 3 billion.
• The increase of taxes, the cuts in social benefits, reduction of employers’ tax and increases in road tax, up to € 6 billion.
• Massive privatization – sale of the State assets: up to € 50 billion.

The Party of the European Left wants to support, once more, the Greek people for their determination to resist against the brutal measures, SYRIZA, trade unions and all who are mobilized defending their rights.

Attac solidarisch mit Widerstand der griechischen Bevölkerung

Destruktive Rezessionspolitik verschärft Krise

Attac Österreich solidarisiert sich mit den hunderttausenden Menschen, die rund um das griechische Parlament in Athen protestieren. "Die Kürzungspolitik, zu der die Troika aus EU, Europäischer Zentralbank und Internationalem Währungsfonds Griechenland zwingen, wird die Krise nicht lösen sondern verschärfen. Das ist die gleiche destruktive Rezessionspolitik, mit der der IWF schon in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren bei Krisen im globalen Süden regelmäßig scheiterte“, sagt Alexandra Strickner von Attac Österreich. „Diese Politik entmachtet demokratisch legitimierte Parlamente, verteilt die Kosten nach unten und opfert öffentliches Eigentum und Arbeitsplätze im Interesse von Banken und Investoren.“

Wer die Krise überwinden will, müsse die Finanzmärkte regulieren, besteuern und schrumpfen sowie die Banken an den Kosten beteiligen – und zwar nicht freiwillig, sondern verpflichtend. Es sei zudem ein fataler Fehler gewesen, die jahrelang erhobene Attac-Forderung nach einer öffentlichen EU-Rating-Agentur zu ignorieren. „Die privaten Rating-Agenturen sind mit den Interessen der Investoren verflochten und tragen massiv zur Schuldenexplosion Griechenlands bei. Eine unabhängige Rating-Agentur als Bestandteil einer EU-Finanzmarktaufsicht solle daher die Risiko- und Produktkontrolle durchführen“, fordert Strickner.

Attac fordert zudem, dass sich Europas Vermögende an der Rettung des Euros beteiligen. „Europaweit koordinierte Vermögens-, Vermögenszuwachs-, Finanztransaktions- und Körperschaftsste­uern brächten jährlich zwischen 500 und 1.000 Milliarden Euro. Damit könnten die Schulden aller Euro-Staaten auf ein ungefährliches Niveau abgesenkt werden, erklärt Christian Felber von Attac. „Um das Zinsniveau sofort zu senken und die Angriffe der Rating-Agenturen abzuwehren muss die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) Staatsanleihen jener Euro-Staaten garantieren, die diese koordinierte Steuerpolitik mittragen. Nur so kann das Mehrfach-Risiko für systemrelevante Gläubigerbanken, Staaten und die Eurozone gleichzeitig gebannt werden.“
